Tom and Jerry have encountered a wide array of characters over the years, some of which they've befriended and many of which they've angered. Tom usually ends up taking the bulk of the heat, with Spike threatening to rough up Tom should any harm come to his son, while Jerry does everything in his power to frame Tom and invoke Spike's wrath. Indeed, many of the episodes that feature Spike and Tyke usually consist of the father and son duo trying enjoy the day together, only for Tom and Jerry inadvertently rain on their parade. But unfortunately for Spike and Tyke, peace and quiet go AWOL whenever Tom and Jerry go at it. After awhile, all Spike wanted to do was get some peace and quite so he could bond with his son. After helping bring Tyke into the world, Spike put his days of rabidly chasing others long behind him and mellowed out even more than before. Because of these things, Spike is extra protective of Tyke and the young dog is virtually never seen without his father by his side. To make matters worse, Spike is effectively a single father due to Tyke's mother unfortunately passing away due to undetermined circumstances. Unlike his father, Tyke is unable to speak or fend for himself all that much. Furthermore, "The Bodyguard" also sparked the beginning of Spike and Tom's rivalry with one another a rivalry that would only become exacerbated when Spike's young son, Tyke, was thrown into the mix. As a matter of fact, the famous 1944 episode in which Spike told Jerry to "just whistle" should the mouse need the Bulldog's help is titled "The Bodyguard." In this episode, Spike began to cement himself as a more complex character who stood up for the little guy and didn't chase others down like a rabid dog. Spike eventually was depicted as being more calm and friendly (well, at least friendly towards Jerry) in his later appearances on the show, acting as something of a bodyguard for the small brown mouse in his times of need. In this episode, Spike was depicted as an aggressive brute of a beast who terrorized both Tom and Jerry in equal measure Spike had, in fact, become such a danger to both Tom and Jerry that the cat and mouse forged an alliance in order to deal with the barbaric Bulldog.
